Port forwarding so that other applications can log on to Oracle off-site?

Dear everyone

I recently set up OCI instant client so that I could get MapInfo Professional 8 to connect to my university database. This worked fine whilst I was on site at university. However now that I am at home I am getting an ORA-12541: TNS:no listener error message.

I have a copy of SQDeveloper and when I wish to connect to Oracle using that I simply run putty and connect via SSH and putty forwards the port 1524 to a local port 22. However I am not sure how I can get the port forwarding to work so that MapInfo, or is it the TNSNAMES.ORA file, can make use of it.

If I log into UNIX using Putty, SQL*Plus gives me a new error message: ORA-12560: TNS:protocol adapter error. If I don't log in using putty, then I simply get the same 12541 error message as MapInfo, which gives me 12541 error message whether I log on via putty or not. I am using Oracle 10.2

If anyone has any advice or help, I would be grateful.

Kind regards

Tim
