Please Help! Oracle 9i, UTL_FILE_DIR parameter, init.ora

I have a problem with my oracle instance reading the UTL_FILE_DIR parameter from the init.ora file. I have double and triple checked the path and it is typed in correctly. As a matter of fact, the parameter was read in before I changed it to a new location (it worked before). Now I can't seem to get the parameter value to pop up. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
