please help me

Please help me,I know mkdir makes a new direcrtory and cp copies,but I am not able to understand clearly what is going on with these two lines

(1)log_dir=`echo $work_dir/$job_id`
mkdir $log_dir

(2)cp $lib_dir/$job_control_file $work_dir/$job_id/$job_control_file
