Please explain double and long ranges

double range is 4.9e-324 to 1.8e+308.

So does this mean a double variable could represent PI as 3.14159265358...out to 300 or so places? and 0.0000000....1 with about 300 zeros added in?

If this is true, than why is a long's range only from approximately -9.2e18 to 9.2e18?
