playing video files with an applet

i was thinking of creating a streaming client/server multimedia application that would consist of a threaded web server, a web browser, and a media player. these applets would be developed using the ServerSocket, Socket and Applet classes + Runnable interface.
what kind of media files can be played with an applet? i know that .mp3 audio files can be played with an applet. but i was wondering could .wmv video files be played with an applet.
