Plans for JDK in Solaris 11.4

Steffen MoserSep 9 2020 — edited Sep 9 2020

Hi all,

I would like to ask you about the plans for Java in Solaris 11.4 (and possibly beyond). Also in the most recent SRU, only Java 8 is shipped. More and more tools need Java 11. I enhanced the great Java build script released by Petr Sumbera after reading this blog post by Martin Mueller and a very interesting blog post by Andrew Watkins in a way that allows compiling Java 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, and 14 after one single call. When trying to go further, I found that the OpenJDK people have abandoned the Solaris support at all beginning with version 15. Currently, we are pleased with version 11, but nevertheless I am curious where we will find ourselves regarding Java support in Solaris in a few years. I fear that it is only a question of time until web tools start to require more recent versions.

So my questions are: Do I see this correctly that besides OpenJDK there are still (more recent) versions of Oracle JDK for both, Solaris/SPARC and Solaris/x86-64, available from Oracle? Are the any plans to skip Solaris support?

Kind regards,
Steffen
