PL/SQL expreesion and PL/SQL function body

In souce value of items we are having options like static text, DB columns like that.
But i didnot used PL/SQL expressions and PL/SQL function body when i try to use its not validating.
Can i know which format i can use?
Full PL/SQL program or only body of function.
If possible provide two simple programs for PL/SQL expression and PL/SQL function body
