Performance RAM vs. CPU Speed

Michael COct 9 2010 — edited Oct 11 2010
Hello everyone,

What would you choose between two systems? I have a decision to make and I'd like your opinions.

System #1
4 CPU with 4 Cores each running at 1.8 Ghz with 500GB RAM (able to cache the entire database into cache with room for growth). This system will store data files on a NetApp filer.

System #2
2 CPU with 6 Cores each running at 3.0 Ghz with 96GB RAM. This system will have SSD to store the data files.

The advantage of system #1 is we can continue to use NetApp snapshots which make a database backup in 2 minutes. This makes system #2 have the disadvantage of requiring us to redesign our backup and recovery strategy. Our primary goal is to increase the read speed of data while the write speed is not as big of a concern.

Do the advantages of one system over the other outweigh the advantages/disadvantages of the other system?

Thanks for any input you can offer,
Michael CUnningham
