Performance for file-based disk images

807567Mar 24 2008 — edited Jun 1 2008
Are there any performance concerns with using file-based disk images for logical domains as opposed to exporting a physical slice as the virtual disk? I have a T5120 with four physical disk drives and want to mirror pairs so I will actually end up with only "two" drives on the system. The project I'm working on requires four domains (one control/IO and three regular domains). I'm trying to determine the best method for disk space distribution to the logical domains while maintaining redundancy like I would in non-domainable servers.

I've read through the various articles that Sun and non-Sun employees have published and have not (yet) found anything stating whether the file-based disk image performance is good enough for an enterprise deployment. My only experience with using file-based disk images as virtual disks is with desktop virtualization software such as VMWare or Parallels. Thanks for any tips or suggestions.
