Performance: Delete statement

Oracle server: 10g
We have a master table. In that there will be 500 deletes heppening per second.
The scenerio is,
First select some records and stored in variables.
Second delete records based on condition.
we have indexed the column used im delete statement where clause.
These statements were written inside the stored procedure.
It is very slow to perform delete operation.
Please anyone can help in this to speed up the delete operation.
