Performance DBA to Data Scientist

User_OCZ1TMay 8 2016 — edited May 24 2016

I apologize, if its not the right question to be asked in this forum. I am having 8yrs+ of work experience till date, have graduated in electronics and telecom engineering, i have worked first four years in oracle/plsql developement then worked as an Application DBA, which involves fixing performance issues(sql query tuning and analyzing overall DB issues by digging into the wait events and drill down to the sql query and tune them... etc) , keeping eye on overall DB performance , plotting performance/capacity trend also was part of different implementation like table compression, Transparent data encryption, index rebuild for reclaimg space etc. Also worked a little bit in data modeling for small project using ERwin. all of my experience are into Oracle technology only.

i need expert suggestion, How difficult/easy would it be to switch in direction of become a data scientist? Is it advisable to switch considering future market condition , job security and also to maximum value add on to knowledge and skill set.Wanted to understand, what all needs to be learned to move in direction of become a data scientist? What all books will be best to start with this? I do get free time in my current job, so thinking to start reading now or do i have to get full time courses on data science?
