PBCS - Batch Scheduler??

Can anyone kindly tell me in simple terms or point me at a document / blog that explains what a batch is in PBCS terms, what they are usually used for and how I create one?

Thanks I did try the documentation but this seems to cover how to schedule a batch, without answering my questions - unless I am missing something obvious????
