Patching/updating linux - consequences on current installation.

Hi,

we are using
* oracle 11.2.0.3.0 enterprise database
* oracle 11.2.0.3.0 RAC
(2 nodes)
+ ASM
+ multipath binary embedded in kernel
+ udev rules

on RHEL 5.7 x86_64.

We encounter some bugs mounting nfs partitions, and there are patches on red had site. I have also some other (more minor) problems that will only be fixed in RHEL 5.8.

My question: these patches will upgrade kernel
=> Can I stop databases (and RAC), install patches (yum), reinstall ASMLib, recompile mpputil (multipath), redo a kernel with new multipath, and be sure that it will work?

A consultant told me everything had to be re-installed as soon as some components are updated (what a mess!)
Is this true? Is there any procedure allowing to install Linux patches without crashing oracle RAC? (a script rebuilding oracle binaries?)

Regards,
Alain
