patching doubt

Hi all,
One of me senior asked me a question in patching and it goes like this...

If you apply the patch to the oracle home then new binaries will be applied in the oracle home then in this case what will happen to the old binaries? where will it be stored? If suppose you rollback a pack then in that case from where the old binaries will be applied to the home?

Wat is the answer for this? Can anybody help?
