Partition growth induces insert slow down

ExorFeb 15 2010 — edited Feb 23 2010
Hello Gurus,

Can one of you please explain what could be the possible causes of an insert slow down as the partition gets fuller?

On a table with weekly range partitions the insert takes 8secs for 200k rows when partition is empty and it grows to 6000secs for 200k rows when there are 90M rows in the partition. Data in tablespaces with:

extent_management=local
allocation_type=uniform
segment_space_management=auto

An insert batch will have the same date and are all done with the /*+APPEND */
I cannot think of any theoretical reason for insert performance degradation related to the volume of the destination segment.
