OVM IO Performance Issues
637764Oct 8 2009 — edited Oct 12 2009We are currently testing Oracle Virtual Machine out to see if we can utilize it. We do have a lot of VMWare and HyperV going up in our environment, but Oracle products are not supported on those.
Curious if anyone else is having IO Performance issues with Oracle VM?
I have OVM1 (physical box) connected to SAN with Fiberchannel.
Installed Oracle VM Manager 2.1.5 with no issues.
I setup Oracle VM Server (OVM10) via a template.
Now when I create a Virtual Server (OVM11), with say of 500 GB of disk space, it takes 30 minutes to create the System.img file (goes up to 60 minutes when specify 800GB of disk space). With other VM products, this is around 10 minutes. Now I can deal with the slowness here since an hour is still less then 2 weeks to order and wait for the box.
However after creating the Virtual Server (OVM11), the IO performance on the virtual server is slow. I copied a db to the server and it takes over 8 minutes to copy a single 5GB Datafile from location a to location b (simply unix cp command) on the virtual server (OVM12). I was able to take a cold backup of my 75 GB db on my physical box in under 10 minutes. So there is a big difference there.
Now, I thought ok, something must be misconfigured with my SAN connection. However, when I do the same setup on a box with local disk (Install Oracle VM Server and create a Virtual Linux Server) I still have the same issue.
So I figure I must have something misconfigured with my Oracle VM Server install, but I can not figure it out.
I do have a SR open with Oracle on this, and so far they agree I have an IO issue.
Any insight someone might have would be great.
Thanks.
