OVDC should offer more configurable desktop scaling

884108Aug 23 2011 — edited Aug 23 2011
Hi all. This is a feature request for OVDC-- I apologize for posting it here, but I'm not sure exactly where to submit it. If anyone can point me to exactly where to file it (no jokes, please! :o)), I'll be happy to do that.

At present (at least on the Mac version of OVDC), if your session desktop is larger than your remote hardware display resolution, OVDC offers only two options. 1. Don't allow scaling (forces you to pan around to see other parts of your desktop); or 2. Allow scaling (which does non-uniform scaling of the session desktop to fit your hardware display resolution exactly).

I commonly start my session from a SunRay with two monitors, so I have a session desktop resolution of 3200x1200. My MacBook Pro has a display resolution of 1440x900. If I do not enable scaling, I can only see about 1/3rd of my desktop (by area). If I turn scaling on, the horizontal scaling (3200->1400) is about 2.3, but the vertical scaling (1200x900) is only 1.3. This results in a "fun-house mirror" style desktop where everything is impossibly tall and skinny. This makes the scaling mode pretty much unusable.

What I would like to see OVDC support is something like what the RealVNC client supports-- user-configurable scaling in both x and y axes. With this feature, it would be possible to ensure uniform scaling in both axes, regardless of the difference between session and display resolution aspect ratios. It would also be possible to scale such that the full-screen scaled desktop was full-view top-to-bottom, but would need scrolling for side-to-side.

Thanks for any comments, suggestions, or feedback.

Cheers,
Chris
