OSD-04002 when adding a redo log member to an existing group

Error:
ORA-00301: error in adding log file 'Z:\oradata\coop1\redoglo01b.log' - file cannot be created
ORA-27040: file create error, unable to create file
OSD-04002: unable to open file
O/S-Error: (OS 3) The system cannot find the path specified.
I am trying to add a backup redo log to a mapped drive to a linux server (samba). The directory exists and all permissions are wide open as I test functionality. I have been using EM to set this up, but it also fails using sqlplus as sys (sysdba). Thanks for any help, and I apologize in advance if I haven't included enough information ... darn newbie to using this forum.
