New to Java

I'm working on a series of projects; one of them involves taking an array of integers

{ 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 10, 11, 12, 13, 21, 22, 973, 1000 }

and creating a new array, adding an ordinal number abbreviation so that the resulting array of Strings, (for instance) from the one above is this:

{ "1st", "2nd", "3rd", "4th", "5th", "10th", "11th", "12th", "13th", "21st", "22nd", "973rd", "1000th" }

So far; my efforts have been fruitless.
