Oracle VM Server on a Laptop?

345978Mar 3 2008 — edited Dec 24 2010
Greetings -
I recently ordered a new ThinkPad, and am considering attempting to install Oracle's VM server on it, with 2 - 10gR2 Rac instances as 'paravirtualized guests,' in order to experience some of the advanced RAC functions. Is this feasible?
The hardware looks like it should support it, if only in paravirtualized mode, that's okay. It has: Intel Core 2 Duo T7500 @ 2.2Ghz, 800mhz fsb, 4Mb L2 cache, 2Gb Ram (expandable to 4Gb), 100Gb 7200rpm Hard drive, Gb Nic (and wireless.)

I would like to set this to Dual boot between WinXP Pro (for work email, etc) and VM Server (+guests) for Oracle 10g. I have read the install docs, and it is somewhat unclear, as I can use 'Unpartitioned Disk space' and then put 'Boot Loader' in first sector of /boot partition.

I am planning on using 'Partition Magic' to resize the Win Partition down to 35Gb, to make room. There doesn't seem to be any mention of GRUB or LILO in the install dos, so I am considering trying to install Grub first, by doing a small Linux install first. After dual boot is working ok, then I'll blow the Linux partitions, in favor of the VM Server.

Has anyone tried this? Success or failure?

Also, is the Management Server actually required, or merely recommended?

Thanks
