Oracle Storage Tiers - Using slower disks for the archive log destination

vilaorMay 12 2011 — edited May 12 2011
Hi all,

We are operating a 2 TB Oracle 10gR2 database. The storage is using high performance EMC FC HDD @ 15 krpm.
We have currently 500GB of this type of storage used for archive log folder.

I would like to suggest to use this folder using fast disks for datafiles and to use a folder based on SATA disks (slower, but much cheaper) for archive logs.

Since the archiving is asynchronous, I don’t think that this will slow down the database as long as the filled online redo log is archived before LGWR needs to use it again.

Any comment is welcome.

TIA,

Rui Vilão
