Oracle SQL - how big before hive is the answer?

Teresa ModestaSep 7 2018 — edited Sep 10 2018

Hello,

I have been trying to bring my skills up to speed with data science / big data technologies.

Recently I read the advice that too many people use big data technologies like hive when SQL would work perfectly well for the 'scale of data' they are analysing.

I know this is a 'how long is a piece of string' question, but my question is what kind of threshold would experts say was beyond Oracle SQL in terms of 'scale of data', when you would be better adopting alternative technologies when you are analysing full table contents?

Also, can anyone meaningfully comment on how well Oracle database works in conjunction with R Studio?

My database is 12.2.01

Many thanks,

Teresa.
