Oracle SID naming restrictions

Hello,

This may sound like a RTFM or Google question, but I have not been able to find a clear answer. From what I can gather, the Oracle System ID can be a maximum of 8 alphanumeric characters, including $ _ and # sign, but what about other punctuation marks and diacriticals, which are also alphanumeric? Regarding the # sign, I wonder how this will work in /etc/oratab?
