Oracle RAC on VMWare ESX ; Considerations

Citizen_2May 18 2017 — edited May 26 2017

+++++++ Version Info +++++++++++

Grid Infra version: 11.2.0.4

OS : Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.8

SAN vendor : EMC VMAX

VMWare ESX version : 6

++++++++++++++++++++++++++

1. Can a single LUN be shared among two (or more ) VMs

In RAC, SAN LUNs for ASM must be shared. I gather that Raw Device Mappings are possible in VMWare. But, the following whitepaper has a table which compares VMFS with RDM.

Screenshot shown below. For RDM , it says " Maps a single LUN to one virtual machine, so only one virtual machine is possible per LUN." !! So, the VM admin has to do some additional tweaking to get the SAN LUN to be mapped to multiple VMs ?

2. VMWare VMotion feature must be disabled for RAC builds. Right ?

I don't think oracle clusterware can afford the downtime (however small) during the Live migration of VM to another host. So, VMWare's VMotion feature should be disabled. Right ?

Any other things which I should let the VMWare Admin know which are specific to Oracle RAC builds ?
