Oracle Linux do not set default kernel after update

Carlos ValenteOct 22 2019 — edited Oct 22 2019

Hi all,

Can someone please share any experience about my recent finding?

I recently found that on OL (in this case a 6.7), after performing a security update (yum update --security), both (rhck and uek) kernel patches were downloaded and installed successfully, but the new kernel wasn't loaded during boot.

The grub file was changed during the yum process, but the default kernel was also changed in order to keep the old version, in this case the rhck.

After almost 10 attempts with new installations from 6.0 to 6.9, passing trough all the versions, I found that when OL is running with uek, the update process performs the update as it also changes the grub.conf, but when running with rhck the grub is changed by adding the new kernel but at the same time, the default option is also changed in order to keep the old version running. That way the OS will always boot with the old kernel version.

I've search a lot but didn't find anything related with such behave.

Questions/Touhts:

- Does OL only update kernel when running in uek and never does it when running in rhck?

- Would it be safe to manually change the grub to force the boot with new kernel (for rhck)?

Thank you in advance,

Carlos
