We’re pleased to announce the availability of the Oracle Linux 9 Developer Preview release for the 64-bit Intel and AMD (x86_64) and 64-bit Arm (aarch64) platforms. Oracle Linux 9 Developer Preview is a major release that introduces many new features, enhancements, and changes. The release is 100% application binary compatible with the Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9 general availability (GA) release. Developers, independent software vendors (ISV), and independent hardware vendors (IHV) can use Oracle Linux 9 Developer Preview to get ready for the GA release of Oracle Linux 9.
Oracle Linux 9 Developer Preview includes security feature updates, networking, high availability, file system improvements, enhanced developer tools, compilers, and scripting language support. Oracle Linux 9 Developer Preview ships with the kernel-uek-5.15.0-0.23.1.el9uek Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel 7 (UEK) and kernel-5.14.0-1.7.1.el9 Red Hat Compatible Kernel (RHCK) packages. The BaseOS repository includes the core set of RPM packages needed to run Oracle Linux. The AppStream repository contains modules, which are sets of RPMs that can or must be installed together, and includes packages that provide more support for various workloads, such as user-space applications, runtime languages, and databases. Deploy and test the developer preview release as a bundle as shipped on the Oracle provided installation image because downgrading kernel packages is not supported.
Note: Oracle Linux 9 Developer Preview should not be used in a production environment.
How to deploy on OCI
To try out Oracle Linux 9 Developer Preview in Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI), use the following steps:
On the Oracle Cloud Console, open the main navigation menu and click Compute, then select Custom Images.
Click Import image.
In the Create in compartment list, select the compartment that you want to import the image to.
Enter a name for the image and select Linux under Operating system.
Select the Import from an Object Storage URL option, and enter the URL of the image. Contact the Oracle Linux team at oraclelinux-info_ww_grp@oracle.com to request the URLs of the Oracle Linux 9 Developer Preview images.
In the Image type section, select the OCI format of the image.
Click Import image. For more details on importing an image, refer to the documentation.
When the custom image is imported and image state changes to Available, click Create instance to deploy the instance. For more details on launching an instance, follow the instructions in the documentation.
Test drive in OCI, Cloud Free Tier, or elsewhere
With OCI Compute, OCI Cloud Free Tier resources are also available for you to test drive Oracle Linux 9 Developer Preview. You can take advantage of Always Free cloud Compute and other services for an unlimited time and access a 30-day trial with up to $300 in free cloud credits.
