Oracle Linux 6 initramfs no longer a gzip file

user13147634Nov 27 2018 — edited Nov 27 2018

initramfs is a cpio archive instead of a gzip file.  In addition, lsinitrd does not display the whole archive onlyAuthenticAMD.bin and GenuinIntel.bin, which is also all that is contained in a manual cpio extraction of the file.  It looks like this behavior began about a year ago.  RHEL 6 initramfs is a gzipped cpio archive.

Is this change deliberate?  If so, how can the whole archive be extracted and reassembled?
