Oracle Identity Management And SPML

Hi all,
As I am new for Oracle Identity management I have some doubts :
1. If we r not using OID to store data then what is the role of identity manager?
2. How OIM works with SPML that is how it recevies SPML request from a Request autority, How it processes it and how sends response back?
3. How to use OIM and SPML?

I searched a lot but nowhere found its implementation examples. I will be really grateful to you all for any help.
