oracle_home backup

Hi,
I am having 9i oracle database installed on linux machine.
Is there any need to take oracle_home backup along with database while patching ..?
What is the mean of ORACLE_HOME backup ?
How can i take bake up of "$ORACLE_HOME" ....can i ?
what is use of tar command in unix ..?

any idea ..
