Oracle Forms and HTML5

Don BerrymanAug 25 2011 — edited Jul 19 2013
I am wondering if there is any plans, or even it is a good idea; to think of porting Oracle Forms to HTML5. By this I mean moving the applet out of the client devices JVM, and onto a server with the GUI displayed in a browser via HTML5.

I admit to my ignorance to the capabilities of HTML5 so this might not even be possible. But if it was we could further reduces Forms foot print on the client. It would also allow us to support Forms on a wider range of devices. And probably make Forms easier to support.

In the past my organization has been able to tightly control client devices; we could dictate the OS, Browser, JVM, etc. Unfortunately that has been out sourced and we have lost that control; so now we are forced to adapt to another organizations decisions. Luckily things have not gotten out of control on the client side, so we have been able to keep up; but not for much longer. There is serious talk of "Bring Your Own Device" to work. It will not be long before I will be asked to get our Forms applications running on an iPad, iPhone, Android or BlackBerry.

The corporate Windows mono-culture is about to explode with diversity; Forms has to keep up somehow. If not this way, can some suggest a better alternative?
