Oracle Enterprise Linux hangs on reboot at xinetd

user5381503Oct 29 2013 — edited Oct 29 2013

Hello, I rebooted my machine from within Linux.  The machine starts up normally.  Just stops.  Black screen.  Reboot with ctrl-alt-delete.  Hit esc.  I have a kdump failed but it continues.  It finally hangs at Starting xinetd [OK].  If I restart with cad, I can see where it stops the various services and restarts.  I tried the "Oracle Linux Server Red Hat Compatible Kernel" and got the same things (no kdump failed, ok this time).  Unbreakable and Compatible stop.

It just stops.  I'm not sure how to proceed to fix it.  Does anyone know how to begin fixing this?  I am using this box to learn and didn't expect this as this was a fresh install.  This is a good time for me to learn .

Oracle 11gR2 is installed as well.  No RAC.  No cluster.

Thanks.

edit:  I should add that I rebooted because my system was going very slow.  "top" indicated "metacity" and Firefox were eating the CPU.  I sudo killed the metacity process.  Rebooted.
