Oracle DB 11G and App Server support

Hi.

I have googled a lot but cannot find the information I am looking for, so apologies if it is readily available.

I have recently upgraded an application to use Oracle DB 11G, but there is a frontend forms and reports application still running on Oracle Application Server 10G - I was wondering whether or not Oracle supports this setup?

I was also wondering what the logic behind having the DB and app server on different boxes is? Does Oracle merely advise this, or would they not support an application if it was running the DB and app server on the same box?
