oracle database slow/not responding

plant form : Unixware 7.1.1 oracle 8i

after working for sometimes database not responding. new users can't login or it hangs. server also can't be shutdown immediately. after restarting the server it works. Please guide me to solve the problem. but again working for sometimes it is unable to connect or not responding.
