Oracle Database and thin provisioning

user1316206Jun 18 2012 — edited Jun 18 2012
We are currently running 11.1.0.7 Oracle Enterprise Databases and will be upgrading to to 11.2.0.3 on HPUX 11.23 and HPUX 11.31 platforms. The databases reside on a Hitachi AMS2100 SAN. I have read an article or two about SAN thin provisioning from the web and it is being noted that thin provisioning really does not work against Oracle databases. The fact that is being stated is that header blocks are written to each of the data spaces allocated to Oracle....so it sounds like the disk space needs to be physically present at time of allocation else there will be issues and as such reclamation of unused space will never happen.

If my explanation is not correct please help correct and clarify or if you could provide further information it would certainly be appreciated.
