Oracle Client 32-bit vs 64-bit (pros and cons)

Jason_SMay 25 2016 — edited May 25 2016

We have an Oracle 11gR2 Oracle database that we connect to with Tableau (and SQL developer/toad/etc).

Our IT department says that our Windows 7 machines should have the 32-bit version installed not the 64-bit version. But they are unable to say why ... other that that is our standard.

What are the pros and cons of going with a 32-bit client over a 64-bit client? compatibility? stability? speed?

From an analyst's perspective I am concerned that the 32-bit version will not be as fast as the 64-bit version (especially when extracting data).

Jason

ps. please move this to another sub-forum if this is not the right one.
