We are now at Oracle RDBMS 12.1.0.2 and using the 12.1 Client on our application servers, and also use ODAC and ODP.NET.
I'd like to upgrade to RDBMS 12.2.
- Will the 12.1 client work without impact?
- ODP.NET and ODAC continue to function the same, without impact?
My experience has been that a new release of the Oracle database doesn't make previous things "not work" or "impactful", but provides new features or enhancements should you choose to use them. With the client, while it's always best to use the latest release, staying at 12.1 rather than 12.2 isn't going to impact anything.
With that said, management wants to know what the impact to upgrading will be, because there aren't enough staff resources to upgrade the client software and then test. These databases support our Enterprise, so why wouldn't you give them the best attention you can and do a little work, I know, but I must ask the question if anyone has encountered "impacts".
