Oracle 7.3.4 client install on a 8.1.7 db server
dignarnAug 23 2010 — edited Sep 10 2010We have a 8.1.7 database that has been running for quite a few years with a bunch of 3rd part apps that are no longer available/supported. The admins of this server have long since gone and setup docs are somewhat lacking or non-existant so system changes are discouraged to avoid potential pitfalls that would force a rebuild. (3rd part stuff was changed in numerous ways by the vendor, etc.. so re-installing is not an option.) As it is this server is to be decommisioned once another system migrates off of using its data so its on life support only.
As it is, we also have another PC with Oracle 7.3.4 client that we need to use to export the 8.1.7 db for this user. The powers that be need to replace this PC however it too has many apps (like the db server) which no one can fully restore. After a review of its use, it was determined that all that is needed is a 7.3.4 client on some system to perform the export.
Management would like to have it all on the db server if possible so my question is - can I install Oracle 7.3.4 client on a 8.1.7 db server and if so are there any issues/config steps that I need to be aware of?
