Oracle 10.2.0.3 to 11.2.0.1 upgrade
I am hoping to get some feedback on an upcoming Oracle upgrade. I am in the pre-planning stages, trying to determine the best server configuration.
This is a standalone installation on single server (no RAC or DG).
The planned update path is to use expdp and impdp (on exp and imp) on a net new server.
Current state:
Databse version: Oracle 10g (10.2.0.3)
OS: Virtualized Windows 2003 Std 32 bit
RAM: 4GB
Disk strucuture: C: (32GB, D: 120GB, E: 80GB)
Hypervisor: ESX (4.2)
Physical hosts: Dell 710
Storage: NetApp (VMware over NFS)
Planned future state
Databse version: Oracle 11g R2 (11.2.0.1 or .3)
OS: Virtualized Windows 2008 R2 DataCenter 64 bit
RAM: 8GB
Disk strucuture: TBD
Hypervisor: ESX (4.2)
Physical hosts: Dell 710
Storage: NetApp (over VMware over NFS)
My questions are as follows:
1. How should i structure the new disks in the new environment and should I use ASM?
[I can't seem to find good information on this anywhere. I do have some flexibility wrt how I do this, being VM'd over NFS or iScsi to the NetApp). Should I create C: for OS, D: for install, E: drive for data, F: drive for logs, G drive for control files ..... or do i ignore drive letters and use mount points, ...]
2. Is there a stand alone install of 11.2.0.3, or do in need to install 11.2.0.1 and then do an upgrade?
3. Does anyone have experience (good or bad) with the NetApp SnapManager suite (for Oracle)? We are considering this approach as well.
Thanks in advance for your help.
