ORA-16466

Oracle version: 12c 12.1.0.1.0

I successfully performed a switchover from a primary to a standby database. Now I want to switch back the current primary back to a standby and the standby back to primary. I ran the command "alter database switchover to DB_NAME verify", and i get the error ORA-16466 invalid switchover target. I followed everything in Doc ID 1579329.1 with still no solution. Does anybody know how I can get around this issue?
