ORA-16136: Managed Standby Recovery not active

i am new to dataguard.i configured datagurd 10g on windows its working fine.
but when wanted to disable the redo apply as
ALTER DATABASE RECOVER MANAGED STANDBY DATABASE CANCEL;
this error occur
ORA-16136: Managed Standby Recovery not active
i have checked the v$archived_dest_status as (on both primary and standby)
STANDBY-STAN>SELECT RECOVERY_MODE FROM V$ARCHIVE_DEST_STATUS WHERE DEST_ID=2;
RECOVERY_MODE
-----------------------
IDLE
any help in this regard
