ORA-12571: TNS: packet writer failure

Oracle client(8.1.6) is installed on my box (windows 2000 workstation). tnsnames.ora is also configured correctly. The Oracle 8.1.6 db is installed on a solaris box. The db instance is also configured, up and runniing.
But when i try to login via my oracle client, it gives the above mentioned error.
The tnsnames.ora file is ok, since my coleagues using the same setup are able to connect from their boxes.
I am able to ping the database, but tnsping does not work.
Any help on pinpointing the cause wd be appreciated..Thanks...
