ORA-06502:PL/SQL:numeric or value error:character to number conversion err

Hi All,

In my code I am using the following -

LPAD (SUBSTR (NVL (rec_demand_file.requested_quantity, ' '),
1,
8
),
8
)

Here requested_quantity is a NUMBER field.
Using the above syntax gives me an error 'ORA-06502: PL/SQL: numeric or value error: character to number conversion error'

Can anyone please help me for this.
Its becoming a show stopper for me.
