ORA-01405: fetched column value is NULL

UPDATE ... SET ... WHERE ... RETURNING LENGTH(xyz) INTO :lenxyz;
results in ORA-01405.
It is actually a normal condition that xyz is NULL sometimes and in this case, I would like to get the value 0 into :lenxyz instead of the ORA-01405 error.
How do I do that?
