ORA-01147

I got this error message while trying to open the database after a point in time recovery.

ORA-01147: SYSTEM tablespace file 1 is offline

What actually trigger this message?
I try to bring the SYSTEM tablespace online by "alter tablespace system online" am I doing the right thing?
