ORA-01081 problem with instance

Hi,
I have to create second database on the same machine (8i/linux). The Database Configuration Assistant doesn't work on this machine so I prepared a configure files, ect for runing second instance. But just after first command: STARTUP PFILE=... I receive "ORA-01081: cannot start already running - shut it down firt" (at that moment the first instance was up).
Any solution?...
Sorry if this problem is trivial for us, but I haven't got a huge experence in creating instance / database on oracle.
