ORACLE 11g database issues with Virtual machines

Hi All

I have been running Oracle 11G on Virtual Machines (VMWARE) each with an individual database, however I keep coming across the following problem and I cannot figure out why it keeps occuring.  After shutting down the virtual machine (from the start menu) and then re-booting the database is failing to start (no matter how long I leave it).

The error message I am receiving is as follows

ERROR :

ORA-01033: ORACLE initialization or shutdown in progress.

I can leave it for a long time and it never starts up, I have also tried mounting and unmounting manually however it does not make a difference and I get an ORA -0600 at that point.

I guess my questions are as follows

1 - What could be causing this (there is no sudden loss to power or failure when the VM shutsdown)

2 - Is there a best practice that I should follow to ensure that this does not happen in the future?

Thanks for any help
