ORA-00932: inconsistent datatypes

PER_PERIODS_OF_SERVICE
comments long

select substr(comments,1,50) from PER_PERIODS_OF_SERVICE

How can i get only 50 charectors from a long?

when i try this i got

ORA-00932: inconsistent datatypes: expected CHAR got LONG
