ORA-00449: LGWR unexpectedly terminated

I do have the following error in the alert log

OS - Solaris 10
DB - ORacle 10.2.0.3
Veritas and ASM controlled.

ORA-00345: redo log write error block 714272 count 232
ORA-00312: online log 3 thread 1: '+DBDG/dws/onlinelog/group_3.274.608872985'
ORA-27070: async read/write failed

and also ....

ORA-00603: ORACLE server session terminated by fatal error
ORA-00449: background process 'LGWR' unexpectedly terminated with error 340
ORA-00340: IO error processing online log of thread
ORA-00340: IO error processing online log of thread

the instance got terminated abroptly.

Ofcourse it got recovered on startup of instance, but like to know what exacly led to the LGWR crash.
