OL 5.7 installs bad root password
Dude!Dec 20 2011 — edited Dec 22 2011Hello,
I've been installing OL 5.7 (x86_64) for a couple of times using Parallels Desktop and Oracle Virtualbox and always had to boot the system into single user mode after the first system restart in order to reset the root password.
The password I'm using contains only Roman/English letters The /var/log secure file shows "Failed password for root from 10.0.0.102 port 64271 ssh2". After resetting the password it works fine. The strange thing is that when setting the password using the "passwd" command it shows that the word is based on a dictionary word. So apparently the previous password was known, but for some reason not usable for a login when applied by the OS graphical installer. The password I used cannot be a commonly known word.
P.S. For anyone running into the same situation:
When the system starts and prompts to any key and counts down - quickly press any key
Select the kernel you want to start from and hit the letter 'e'
Move the cursor to the line showing "kernel...." and hit the letter 'e' again.
Type the word "single" at the end and press Enter
Hit the letter 'b' to start the system
There will only be a short startup, prompting you at the command line.
To reset the password type "passwd" and follow the messages.
Then type "shutdown -r now" and let the system restart as usual.
Kind regards
