OEL 5.8 on Sandy Bridge workstations?

I wish to use the 5.8 linux (as it still has old gcc which I need for an archaic package). I have installed this on old machines, and would like to upgrade.
I have seen in other enterprise linux forums, some problems cropping up. The integrated ethernet on Sandy Bridge mainboards in not supported in RHEL 5.
Also new-fangled graphics cards might not work either. Since Oracle 5.8 has a newer kernel than Centos (for example) will it install on Sandy Bridge okay?
